the water cycle: once every 3,000 years

water is life– water is alive. It exists in us and around us, most familiarly in various bodies throughout the globe. But water has a story too, one far beyond the bodies we know.

collection

The story is circular, but we'll start where we know it. Whether in puddles or oceans, in potholes or pools, water collects. It unifies- creating bodies that move like ours. Rolling and roaring in fits of rage or pushing and pulling like a moody lover. Some bodies are stagnant, some bodies never still.

evaportation

Just like us, all bodies all look to the same sun. With its fervent, commanding energy, the sun will inspire a change in the water. It pulls it out of its body- modifying its form. It'll become "vapor", drawing into itself in preparation for a rare journey into the sky.

the climb

It's not so simple, the journey. It's a treacherous climb. The water will contort to be unrecognizable, it will change in an unimaginable way. But no matter how difficult, the water will move up through the atmosphere, sometimes over 60,000 feet up, until it arrives in the kingdom of the clouds.

once every 3,000 years

The journey is transformative, but at its core, the water remains the same. Once every 3,000 years, it will find itself in a new world. But it has been here before. The clouds are a time of reunion, of embrace, as the water returns to liquid form.

departure

In a final performance of courage, the water will depart from the clouds. It will say its goodbyes with the comforting knowledge that the journey will come again, even if not for another 3,000 years. But for now, the water will embark on a new adventure, taking a faithful jump to join a new body back on earth.

precipitation

We know it as rain (or snow, or hail), but the water knows it as its only moment alone. The water is reborn in the freefall, transformed from the beginning, no two journeys to the sky and back are the same. Soon the water will become a part of something much larger than itself, it will become united once again.
